Near Field Communication (NFC) enables contactless payments by allowing a secure, short-range wireless “handshake” between a customer’s device and a payment terminal. The process is defined by several key technical and security features:
- Short-Range Frequency: The technology operates at 13.56 MHz and requires devices to be within approximately 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) of each other. This close-proximity design ensures that transactions only occur when a customer intentionally brings their card or device near the reader, preventing accidental scans.
- Tokenization: To protect sensitive information, NFC systems use tokenization. Instead of transmitting the actual card number, the system replaces it with a unique, single-use digital identifier (a token).
